Excursions in Ilulissat

Here you will find the different excursions you can do when you visit Ilulissat. If you book the excursion when you book your trip, the risk will be low that it is fully booked or cancelled because of to few participants.

One of the most popular and maybe a "must" when you visit Ilulissat is the boat tour to the Icefjord. You can take it in daylight or, depending on season, during the midnight light. Another popular tour is the guided city walk, that is a perfect start for your visit. You will learn the history of the town and learn what current attractions are in town during your stay.

People might say: “ We can take a walk around the town on our own.” Yes, you probably can, but with the culture-historical walk you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give the other experiences in Greenland a new perspective.

Ilulissat – Jakobshavn - was founded in 1741 and it is today the third biggest town in Greenland with over 4500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the city, the Greenlandic culture and the modern life 300 km north of the Arctic Circle.
We will visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brædtet”. We will show you the church and the house where the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen was born.

Sermermiut - The old settlement at the Icefiord (J-02)

Beautiful Icebergs are the setting for the old settlement of the Sermermiut 1½ kilometres south of Ilulissat. For 4000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and today, you can still see the relics which indicate their presence.

Hear the story about the Inuit people’s life and traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland, see the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands.

On this hike we will pass “kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Icefiord, before heading back again.

During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geology and not least the story behind the omnipresent ice.

Boat tour to the ice fjord (J-31)

Price: 89 €
Min 8 participants

Almost every visitor in Ilulissat chooses to try this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. During the year more than 46 km3 of ice flow out into the fiord. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 metres on each side and with a height on more than 100 metres above the water surface. These giants strand at the end of the fiord, and that gives a good opportunity to sail among them. An exceptional experience, you do not want to be without, while visiting Ilulissat.

The icebergs are beautiful every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear, the blue shades are very beautiful, when it is cloudy and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. The boat trip at bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience.

Remember to bring warm clothes and the camera!

Day tour to Eqip Sermia - the calving glacier
(J-30)

Price: See separate page about Eqi

Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fiord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible by boat to get very close to the glacier and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are enormous and the sight of the icebergs, crashing into the water, is breathtaking.

It is possible to combine a boat trip with a stay in Glacier Lodge Eqi. If that is your wish, look at excursions under Overnight Stay in Glacier Lodge Eqi.

We sail in modern and convenient boats at the excursion to Eqi. The route goes north along the coast passing Bredebugt, the settlement of Oqaatsut and the big fiord system called Pakitsoq, where whales and seals often are seen. Further on through the Ataa Strait, which is surrounded by steep mountains with bird life and waterfalls. Our ice secured boats lie approximately 2 hours in front of the glacier and wait for the ice to calve, while a delicious lunch is served. An all-day excursion, where you will have a good opportunity to be immersed in the experience and the boat trip in the ice filled water.

Please notice:
The length of the boat trip to and from the glacier can last between 2 - 5 hours each way. It depends on the boat used the given day. The stop in front of the glacier lasts approximately 2 hours.

Hiking - At Sea - From air - Winter tours

The dog sledge is one of the strongest icons of Greenland. An Inuit tradition, dating thousands of years back in time! You will not find many other means of transportation, which has survived for so long without any changes. The basic principle is still the same as in the Viking age; some dogs tied to a simple construction of wood. The experience cannot be explained – you have to try it.

We offer a different range of dog sled tours In the Ilulissat area. Our experienced drivers (former fishermen) and their dogs have been travelling with sledges for years. In cold and long winters when the sea is frozen and it is difficult to sail, the fishermen uses the dog sled as a mean of transportation to get to the icefjord and back with fish. Even with the introduction of the new and fast snowmobiles, the dog sled is still the safest and most secure way to travel.

The dog sled is not done in a straight line as in many other places. Here the dogs are widly distrubuted on the harnest. This makes it very important t communicate with all dogs and therefore it is not possible to drive the dogs your self but instead have a greenlandic driver. The drivers are sometimes not able to speak English or Dannish, only Greenlandic. They day to day job is not to drive tourists but working with the dogs whole fishing or hunting.

The driver is part of the dog pack and of cours the leader. Sometimes a young dog try to challange the leader and then the driver need to be very harsh. This can sometimes be hard to relate to, but is good to know and have an understanding why.

Its required for the participants to have warm clothes and right equipment for the dog sledge excursions. The average winter daily temperature are 15-20°C below zero. Seal skin clothes and boots can be rent with an additional cost per person.

The participants should also be in good physical condition. The excursion has a quite high level of difficulty. Its required for the participants to bring only one piece of luggage with a max weight of 15 kg.

NB! Price per person can vary depending if you will be 1 or 2 persons per sled. On tours that are 5 hours or longer there will always only be one passenger per sled.
