Grönlandsexpedition - Östkusten med segelbåten Aurora, (5110)

Följ med på en spännande seglats längst grönlands östkust med Aurora, segelfartyget som seglat jorden runt 4 gånger. Aurora har nu byggts om med ny inredning och utrustning och är ett mycket säkert och bekvämt segelfartyg. Grönlands östkust är en fantastisk vildmark där endast 3500 invånare är utspridda på den över 260 mil långa kusten. Här finns den arktiska skönheten när den är som mest överväldigande.

Isafjordur är den närmaste hamnen från östra Grönland och ligger endast 200 sjömil bort. De östra delarna av Grönland är de mest isolerade områdena och invånarna i de glest bebodda samhällena upptäcktes först 1894 av européerna när löjtnant Gustav Holm ledde en grupp bestående av 36 expeditionsdeltagare i sju kajaker och 4 roddbåtar tog sig runt Grönlands sydligaste udde genom Prins Christian Sunds smala korridor för att sen ro / paddla norrut längs kusten.

Turen den 16/8 startar och slutar på Grönland i Kulusuk medans turen den 2/9 startar och avslutar på Island i Isafjordur.

Program
Is- och väderförhållanden dikterar resans färdväg. Nedan följer ett planerat program som mycket väl kan komma att ändras under resans gång. Flexibilitet är nyckeln till en lyckad expedition!

16-26 augusti

Day 1 - Monday August 16th
Meet onboard AURORA where she is anchored in Kulusuk harbour. Leave in the afternoon, short sailing to the Ikásak sound and anchor in an unnamed fjord.


Day 2 - Tuesday August 17th
Sail across Angmagsalik fjord and through Ikásagtivaq fjord and anchor behind the small village of Tiniteqiláq. Oportunities to go ashore for short hikes and visit of the village. Also option to take the kayaks out for a spin.


Day 3 - Wednesday August 18th
Continue over to the great Sermilik fjord. The fjord is often very beset with ice and we don´t know how much we can navigate there. We will attempt to cross the fjord over to Johan Peterson fjord and anchor there. Here are some great glaciers calving into the sea.


Day 4 - Thursday August 19th
This will be a full day of sailing. We will sail out of Sermilik fjord, around Angmagsalik island and past Kap Dan to Sermiligaq fjord. We´ll continue past the village and anchor close to the head of the fjord.


Day 5 - Friday August 20th
We´ll spend another night at this same anchorage. The two great glaciers of Karale and Knud Rasmussen calve into Sermiligaq fjord and we´ll hike up to either of these glaciers.


Day 6 - Saturday August 21th
Today we will sail into Ikateq sound and stop for a moment at the abandoned US military base „Bluie East 2". Here was an airport during WW2. We´ll continue past Tuno fjord and here is an option for people to kayak over to the village of Kungmiut. AURORA will sail through Ikásak sound and we´ll anchor off Kungmiut.


Day 7 - Sunday August 22th
We´ll sail further into Angmagsalik fjord and enter the fjord of Tasilaq. We´ll anchor at the head of this fjord. Mountains between 1000 and 2000 meters are all around this fjord.


Day 8 - Monday August 23th
Another day will be spent at anchor in Tasilaq fjord. Here are great oportunities for hiking or kayaking.


Day 9 - Tuesday August 24th
We now head back down Angmagsalik fjord and anchor behind Griseøen (Pig Island). Off here is an area where the whales gather to feed on the small Capelin fish.


Day 10 - Wednesday August 25th
Today we sail further down the fjord and tie up at the town of Tasiilaq. This is the largest community in Eastern Greenland. Here is a very interesting museum and great hiking all around the town. In the afternoon we make the short sail across the fjord to Kulusuk.


Day 11 - Thursday August 26th
Short sightseeing in the village of Kulusuk and then get ready to catch the plane back to Iceland.

2 - 9 September

Thursday September 2nd
Departure from Isafjordur at 19:00. Weather permitting we will start the crossing of Denmark Strait which should take approximately 32 hours. If the weather is rough on the strait we will stay in the beautiful sheltered fjords of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and do some hiking or kayaking there. This late in the season there is always a bit higher risk of storms on the Strait.

Friday September 3rd
On the sea, looking for whales and dolphoins.

Saturday September 4th
Arrival in Greenland in the early morning. Landfall in Mikis fjord and anchor there. Here is an option to hike into the flower-filled Sødalen valley and perhaps visit a working camp of researchers looking for gold and platinum in the Skærgård intrusion. In Mikis fjord are also long-abandoned Inuit ruins that allude to a time when the Dorset culture populated the NE coast.

Sunday September 5th
We´ll stay in Mikis Fjord, perhaps move to another anchorage in the fjord. Great oportunities for hiking or kayaking in the fjord.

Monday September 6th
Move to the great Kangerdlugssuaq fjord ("Big fjord"). It is an option to kayak over or sail with the boat. The AURORA will anchor in Suhaili bugt. This is a very sheltered anchorage where sir Robin Knox-Johnston and sir Chris Bonington anchored the Suhaili when they attempted to climb the Cathedral peak in 1991.

To the Ammassalik people, Kangerdlugssuaq apparently has always been regarded as an especially rich hunting ground - a kind of Shangri-La, that can be reached only with difficulty but where life can be expected to be good. Recent endeavours to colonize Kangerdlugssuaq date from 1966 when a number of families from Ammassalik (Tasiilaq) overwintered in the remains of an old American weather station and expedition houses from the 30s. They had a very good season (35 polarbears, 62 narwhales and about 2100 seals) and returned most years afterwards.

Tuesday September 7th
Spend time at the anchorage at Suhaili bugt. We can take the kayaks out and paddle over to the abandoned Skærgård Inuit village or hike along the granite cliffs of the area or to neighbouring calving glaciers.

Wednesday 8. September 2010
Departure from the Kangerdlugssuaq fjord and set sail across the Denmark Strait back to Iceland. We´ll keep a keen lookout for whales and dolphins on the way,as well as for the ever-present icebergs (!)

Thursday 9. September 2010
Arrival back in Isafjordur in the late afternoon.
